Sean J. Levy is a contemporary painter born in 1996 in Melbourne, living and working in Perth, Western Australia. Working primarily in acrylic and spray paint on stretched canvas, he is best known for densely textured abstractions that recall pixelated images, woven textiles and weathered walls. Incorporating domestic materials such as mesh, lace and non-slip mats, his surfaces explore the tension between analogue materiality and digital systems.
Process is central to Levy's practice. Rather than painting an image directly, he builds each surface through repeated cycles of imprinting, stencilling, scraping and erasure, so that the finished work becomes a record of how it was made. Grid and dot patterns read as pixels and scanlines, lace leaves floral motifs, and peeling, cell-like forms open onto the layers beneath. From a distance the paintings resemble degraded digital images, but up close they dissolve into crust, gloss and cast texture. His recent work has moved further towards pattern and system, including paintings built around a randomised colour sequence.
A self-taught artist, Levy came to painting after working in counselling, support work and industrial relations. In 2025 he exhibited in the inaugural group exhibition at Deadspace Art Collective, Perth. He is a member of Artsource, The Artists' Foundation of WA, and is currently preparing for his first solo exhibition.
